A centralidade do processo de comunicação para a pesquisa científica suscita o exame das mudanças que repercutem de modo diferenciado nos campos do conhecimento científico. As rápidas alterações provocadas pelo advento das novas tecnologias de informação impõem o aprofundamento de estudos sobre: a) os papéis dos atores da cadeia de comunicação, intermediários entre o autor e o leitor; b) as modificações dos canais informais e formais, com ênfase no periódico científico; d) o sistema de publicação digital com impacto nas práticas da leitura e manipulação do texto acadêmico pelos cientistas; d) o fluxo da comunicação da informação. Considerando a dimensão política - incluindo a geopolítica - abrangendo a produção, disseminação e circulação da informação científica, destacam-se as dimensões legais, éticas e de integridade da pesquisa científica.
